Let's begin this journey together...ok so a month or so late starting the blog but...
I am an emotionally eater. I eat/drink when I'm happy, sad, bored, excited, celebrating, socializing, upset. I add drink in there because I am a lover of wine and enjoy my wine and even on Keto, I choose not to give it up completely. I'm just your average mom, girlfriend, career woman that like so many of us struggle with our weight. I've even had weight loss surgery (Lap Band in 2009) and I still struggle. I've done the low carb diet in the past, to be specific, I used to use the Somersize Program by Suzanne Somers. And it worked for me then, I lost about 40# and then I reverted back to eating habits that did not maintain the weight loss.
I had a friend tell me there were trying Keto and I knew it was a low carb way of eating like Paleo but I starting looking into it more and seeing what the plan was about to see if I could follow it with ease. Like any new way of eating, preparing and prepping meals is ESSENTIAL these days with our busy schedules and life on the go. The amazing thing this time around is that I have a willing and participating partner on my journey, my wonderful boyfriend, Joe. Since we've began dating, a little over a year now, I gained about 30# back that I had lost since the beginning of 2017. I dropped those 30+# from January to about June/July timeframe. And then the new relationship-going out to eat-imbibing the alcohol-parties-events, etc. weight began creeping back on my body.
Joe did a lot of fast food eating and I for about the past 6 months, had not. So the weight packed on me very quickly. And with an underactive thyroid and a desk job, I did not do much exercising. Joe had some bad tummy issues as well and I was gaining. We were plump and happy. Fast forward to this past summer, we decided to move into together. We discussed cutting our eating out budget for money reasons as well as for health reasons. One night, we went to dinner with the friend I mentioned above and she mentioned doing Keto and the weight was coming off for her. Her and her boyfriend shared a yummy tomahawk steak (it was like 40oz) with an amazing salad that evening at The Salted Pig. Now that kind of meal was still keto, yeah the portion size was larger than a normal cook-at-home meal but they were still able to stick to the keto way of eating and enjoy without feeling the guilt of 'cheating' on your diet.
So with me being the preparer of the majority of our meals at home, I asked Joe if we could do Keto together. He had done Paleo in the past and had a few cookbooks, I took to Pinterest and began creating a board and pinning recipes, facts and tips about Keto. We were on our way. We did a pantry sweep, keeping some things in a different pantry area for our kids, giving some things to our roommate and others to Joe's sister. We shopped together with Keto shopping lists to stock up on staples and be prepared. My best piece of advice with Keto or any way of eating you choose for yourself, be prepared. Make sure you have staples on hand to stay on track. Plan your week out a bit with what you have. There is nothing worse than throwing away a ton of food that you did not utilize. It's sad, it's wasteful and just disappointing...but it does happen. And also recipe fails happen too..ALOT. Don't get discouraged, just try it again or find a different recipe. I had to do that with Keto bread. The first attempt was ok, then it was mushy. Error-don't store like regular bread...store it in the fridge!!
I started working into the Keto Lifestyle on or about August 7, I logged my weight at 221.9 on Carb Manager. It was a beginning that wasn't strict but more of a transition. Joe began about a week or 2 later. So the first month saw a lot of water weight drop, I was logging everything I ate, exploring new recipes and made my first 'fat bomb'. The fat bomb came out awful, I mixed it too long and it turned from creamy to grainy FAST. Joe still liked it. It was a Peanut Butter Mousse fat bomb recipe. I just screwed it up. So from Aug 7 - Sept 5, I dropped 15.3#. And there were a few cheat meals in there as well. (Mac & Cheese event at The Rookery in DT Pomona-my weakness)
After my birthday on September 7th and a weekend of eating out, making some big life changes (new job), and adjusting to cohabitating, the Keto planning was so-so. I wasn't walking anymore like I did in the beginning, I got a little lazy about getting all my water intake done in a day. I had wine or other alcohol a little more often and the scale didn't move as much. But I did notice my clothes fitting better, even with doing Keto a bit half-assed. So I started this week with a plan...a good menu plan, prepping keto bread, making sure I use what I have on hand and I put workout clothes on today as a hopeful motivator to be a bit more active...it's 3:50 and I only have 1696 steps today :/
So I have come up with 'rules' for myself that I see results
-Log what you eat and drink...ALL OF IT
-Get at least 5K steps in a day or get a workout done...searching for BodyBoss workout book after this blog entry is done.
-Meal plan, meal prep and keep to the shopping list-always check your Keto staples.
-Find an accountability partner-I'm lucky to have Joe right in front of me on the daily. But get on the Facebook groups and find someone to check in with. And do it. Accountability only works when you and your partner are actively checking in with one another.
-Ignore the haters-I'm on a few groups-just ignore some of the perceived snippiness and finger-waving judgement. You know your body better than anyone else. It's ok to ask for help. Just know if you ask 50 people, you will get 51 different answers.
-Don't beat yourself up for the cheat-Get back on track as soon as you can with your next meal or do an intermittent fast and just pound the water.
There are more things I could add to this list and I will throughout the blog entries. I would like to add some videos later of me cooking certain recipes and such. I'd like this blog to keep me motivated and share my journey. I hope you will join me along the way. Thanks for listening.
